How to fight depression with meditation

Meditation benefits.

Meditating allows you to bring the mind to a state of calm, concentration and silence.  Meditation is based on physical relaxation, something that alone can help the depressed person feel better, by reducing bodily discomfort. In addition, it helps to improve memory and promote creativity, awakening the mind. This is very beneficial for the day-to-day of those who suffer from depression, since being able to carry out new projects or creative activities will make them feel fulfilled.

Finally, when we meditate, we become aware of the present, our person and what surrounds us, seeing ourselves in a different way, and obtaining a new point of view that allows us to give different solutions to problems or anguish that we thought were irremediable.

There is no one type of meditation. Different religions, schools and doctrines have given rise to different types of meditation, each with its own peculiarities.

Studies indicate that the most beneficial for depressed people is Buddhist mindfulness meditation, which leads the subject to focus on the present. However, each person must find the meditation that makes them feel best and helps them the most, either alone or with the help of professionals.

Go little by little. Try different types of meditation, find your ideal place to concentrate, explore if you prefer free or guided meditation. Don’t be in a hurry, enjoy the learning process and the lessons it brings you.

Once you find your perfect meditation, put it into practice gradually. The first week ten minutes, the second fifteen. And so on until you can stay thirty or forty minutes in a meditative state.

Your meditation routine.

Try to always meditate at the same time and in the same place. Thus, when the moment approaches, the body will recognize that it must relax and prepare for a relaxed moment.

Pick a place where you feel comfortable, and a time when you know there will be no interruptions. Be aware that this moment is for you, allow yourself to enjoy it and feel good with yourself while you meditate.

Some sports, like yoga, have many of the characteristics of meditation built in.

Practicing a light, pleasant sport, which allows you to enhance your meditation and at the same time exercise, will be very helpful to combat the state you are in.
